Sustainable forestry in the Chinese province of Jiangxi

The Jiangxi Province Le'an County Forest Farm Carbon Sink Project is being implemented in Le'an County, Jiangxi Province, China, and involves improved forest management of forests.

The area of project activity is 7,746.7 ha, including 50 plots spread across Jinzhu Zhaoxie Zengtian Niutian Shipi Gongxi Shipi Harvest Nuture and Zhaoxie Harvest Nuture divisions. All these divisions are state forests and have the legal right to forest ownership. The tree species involved in the project are Chinese fir and slash pine. Prior to the implementation of the project activity, the trees were felled based on a valid and verifiable government-approved timber management plan for the harvest of the project area.

Through the implementation of the project activity, the trees were converted into protected forests to reduce GHG emissions by approximately 3,377,151 tCO2e in 30 years. The Verified Carbon Units are approximately 2,600,406 tCO2e in 30 years. The project activity contributes to the environment and biodiversity and thus contributes to sustainable development.

Decent work and economic growth:
The regulated management of the forest creates long-term jobs, both in forest management and in the area of forest work.

Climate protection measures:
Carrying out this project will save approximately 86,680 tCO2e annually.

Life on land:
The project aims to protect the natural habitat of wild animals in and around the forest in order to promote biodiversity. Choosing tree species that are appropriate for the location also reduces soil erosion.
